Monitor Water Quality in Local Streams! Interested? Contact the Coalition today!

The Stormwater Coalition has selected several stream sites for monitoring by volunteers. Trained as local coordinators, Coalition or MS4/municipal staff will guide volunteers in data collection using WAVE, a citizen-based water quality assessment developed by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). This biological data is used to assess water quality on wadeable streams, helping to detect changes in water quality over time and detect threats before they become a problem. The Stormwater Coalition is coordinating this volunteer initiative as part of their inter-municipal stormwater program. The monitoring sites are pre-approved by the NYSDEC state-wide WAVE Coordinator and the stream samples are submitted to NYSDEC for analysis.

The monitoring season ends September 30 and the Coalition has four sites which need monitoring. They are located in the following watersheds: Vly Creek which is a sub-watershed of the larger Normanskill; Vlomankill; Delphuskill; and Cohoes Crescent Bushkill, all located in Albany County. To learn more about these watersheds, see Coalition website/Watershed Maps & Others.

WAVE stream monitoring is fun, educational, and a great way to re-discover our neighborhood streams. Interested?? Excellent! Contact the Coalition today at 447-5645 or swcoalition@albanycounty.com.
